News from Pastor in Training (P.I.T.)

Have you ever come back from a vacation and felt like you needed another vacation from your vacation? As we work, we come to know our limitations and the need to take a break. However, I would argue that not many of us know how to refuel properly. For example, I’ll go for a run (once in a blue moon) only to come back and eat that candy bar, because I think I deserve it! As much as the candy bar tastes good, it is not exactly what my body needs after a run.

Many of us exert ourselves, but then try to refuel with things that never satisfy. In these summer months, many of us find time to go on a vacation. However, I would encourage you to reflect on how replenishing your vacations actually are, or how you can make your vacations a real time of rest and growth in the spiritual life!

When I was a missionary, we would encourage our students that when they go home for breaks, to not to take a vacation away from God. In a similar vein, how many of us travel and take a break from going to Sunday Mass? It is more than just fulfilling our Sunday obligation, but we should invite the Lord into our break, so that we can actually be fed and nourished. It is beautiful that in our Gospel, after the Apostles were sent on mission, Jesus personally took them to a deserted place so that they could rest. He wanted to reveal the importance of getting away from the world and spending time with him.

Taking time for silence is important. Reading spiritual books, or listening to podcasts that lift the soul to God can be extremely fruitful. How many of us say that we don’t have time to pray as much as we should, but then on vacation we don’t make time to seek the Lord- even though we don’t have a million things to get done!

As a priest, I am required by Canonical (Church) law to take a 5-day retreat every year! Luckily, I’m a rule follower and I took my retreat at the beginning of June. It was life giving. I slept, prayed, worked out, and read. I had the opportunity to pray the rosary and divine mercy chaplet every day with a group of holy cloistered nuns. I offered Mass every day for our parish.

It also allowed me to examine my year as a priest. Just as our first reading calls out the bad shepherds of Israel, I prayed for forgiveness for the ways I may have failed as a shepherd, and I gave thanks to the Lord for the graces I have received as a shepherd (which are many at OLM).

I hope you have seen the fruit of that retreat in my own life and priesthood since I have returned, and I encourage you to find the time to do the same. May the next vacation you take be an opportunity to rest in the Lord and be replenished by Him!

Reflect on the National Eucharistic Revival 7/23

  • In his homily this past Sunday, Fr. Michael briefly spoke about the National Eucharistic Revival held last week. This event brought the entire Church in the United States together in prayer before the Eucharistic Lord. Tens of thousands of Catholics participated, processing through the streets of Indianapolis in a historic display of faith, love and hope. Each night, over 50,000 faithful gathered at the stadium to adore Jesus in the Eucharist, experiencing an atmosphere that words can scarcely capture.     God has accomplished something extraordinary through this Revival, exceeding all expectations. It embodied what the Church is called to be: a community united in mercy, grace, and intercession for the world. Far from being quiet about Jesus, the Church joyfully evangelized through prayer, worship, and testimony—all because of the gift of the Eucharist.     We thank You, Lord Jesus. May the Most Holy Eucharist be forever adored and honored for the blessings poured out on our nation during last week’s events. We encourage you to watch the talks, relive the Revival, and share the mercy, grace, and love of Jesus in the Eucharist with others, especially those who have yet to know Him. All coverage and recordings are available at this link from EWTN.

Continuing on Fr. Don’s Legacy; Supporting Ertha’s Orphanage and School in Haiti 8/18 & 8/19

  • In 2014, Father Don visited Duchity, a small village in southwest Haiti, and met Ertha Papillon, a devoted leader of Ste. Marie-Madeleine. Ertha runs an orphanage and school, tirelessly serving the poor in her community. She will speak at all Masses at OLM, updating us on her 2021 visit’s impact.
  • Since July 2021, Haiti has faced severe turmoil, with gang control in Port-au-Prince causing food shortages and inflation. In August 2021, an earthquake destroyed most homes and damaged Ertha’s facilities. Despite these challenges, Ertha has reopened the school in early 2022, which now serves 350 students from preschool to grade 9, even though many parents can’t pay full tuition. Funds from her 2021 visit helped repair the school roof, but teacher salaries remain an issue.
  • The earthquake also destroyed the main orphanage building. With funds from her 2021 visit, Ertha has completed the construction of a second building where 14 girls now live. However, 12 boys still sleep in the dining area and need a proper dorm. The original building’s foundation is being used to construct a boys’ dorm, but more funds are needed to complete it.
  • To continue Fr. Don’s legacy of supporting Ertha, we invite you to open your hearts and embrace the spirit of generosity. Together, we can profoundly impact the lives of the children in Ertha’s Orphanage and School in Haiti. Your kindness will help rebuild the dorms, support their education, and provide a brighter future.
  • We sincerely seek your support. Donations can be made online or by placing your envelope in the basket in the Narthex after Mass on 8/18 and 8/19. Thank you for your generosity!

OCIA (Becoming Catholic) Begins 9/16

  •      Are you interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the process to become Catholic? Or are you curious about what initiation for adults means?
Our blessed Lord Jesus Christ said to Matthew “Follow me” and he rose and followed him. For Catholics, we respond in a similar way. The Christian way of life and becoming Catholic goes through a process of initiation, which is falling in love with Jesus and becoming His disciple. Through weekly meetings, we strive to help people learn how to respond to the prompting of God in their lives.
The best way to learn is by doing Catholic things and hanging around other Catholics. The way to practice being a Catholic and enter into this process is through entering a way of life, as an apprentice learns from a master and that master’s community.
Our blessed Lord Jesus is our master and becoming Catholic is a lot like being His apprentices. We call this process the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults often referred to as OCIA. It involves encountering the Word of God through the liturgies and personal study, engaging in a vibrant community at Our Lady of Mercy, worship with fellow believers in Christ, learning to pray and be of service to others.
Meetings will take the form of classes on Monday evenings led by our pastor, Fr. Michael Kearney and parochial vicar, Fr. Frank Pusateri and an invitation to fellowship gatherings on Thursday evenings starting in September.
If you are interested in being Catholic or know of someone who is interested, take the next step in responding to God’s call by completing the form on our webpage

Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal 2024

  • If you have already pledged your support to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA), we sincerely thank you! If we all join together, we can meet our parish’s goal of $140,500. Each and every gift, regardless of size, truly matters and makes a difference. If you still plan on making your gift, please prayerfully reflect on how best you can support the CMAA this year to help those in need throughout our diocese, For the Glory of God. Pledge envelopes are still available in the church, or you can use the envelope you received in the mail from the diocese. Or donate online here.Remember, if we raise more than our goal, the diocese will return 70 percent of the amount over goal to us to reinvest in our own parish. This is an incredible opportunity and blessing. Your generosity is so greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing your blessings!

Scam Emails and Text Messages

  • From time to time, there are phishing (SCAM) emails going out to members of the parish and staff claiming to be Father Michael as well as text messages.
Please note that Father Michael and Father Frank DO NOT send texts or emails asking for money or gift cards. If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father Frank, please discard it (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!
