From the P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)

I hate vocation stories…or at least I used to. I always struggle with the fact that so many of these stories, after dealing with the twists and turns of that person’s vocational journey, seemed to end with seminary as if it were the solution to all their problems. But I have to tell you that that is not the case, as I learned the hard way.

As I entered seminary, I believed that it would be like my past experiences of college, but when I tried to joke and be myself, it was badly received, so I pulled back and was quiet. I was told that my theology degree would help me get out of introductory classes, but I found myself fighting tooth and nail to prove that I knew anything. And an irrational fear of the human pillar of seminary formation—of being told I wasn’t human enough— was quickly realized in my first formation meeting. I felt like Jeremiah in the First Reading this past Sunday, who said, “You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped.” 

In a similar way, in the Gospel we heard last week, Peter has just heard that Jesus would “give [him] the keys to the kingdom of heaven.” But then this past Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus turns around and predicts His Passion, which seems to go completely counter to what Jesus had just said to him about the Kingdom of God. So it’s no wonder that he says, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” 

As I continued through seminary, I continued to feel this heaviness, and whenever it became too overwhelming, I would find myself saying to myself: “I don’t want to be here.” The last time I preached, I talked about listening for God’s voice in the silence. But when we listen for God’s voice, there is the risk also of hearing our own or the enemy’s voice. When I brought the situation to my spiritual director, he very simply and bluntly said, “And whose voice do you think that is?” 

When I was able to recognize that that voice was not from God, this did not remove the sufferings, but allowed me to see this as part of God’s Plan. Instead of being a passive participant in my life, I felt God calling me to take an active role in my spiritual life. Jesus tells us, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” 

We are also called to take an active role in our spiritual lives, taking up the crosses that God allows to come into our lives. However, as we carry our crosses, we do not do this alone, but always following after Jesus. I don’t hate vocation stories anymore because I know that it’s only part of the story, that discerning our vocation is part of the Cross, but a Cross that ultimately leads to the Resurrection.

Salt and Light 9/6

A Mother’s Heart Grow Group 9/6, 9/7, 9/20, & 9/21

• A Mother’s Heart is a group for Catholic mothers with children ages 0-11 who are seeking to journey with other like-minded women of faith.  Following the example of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, we strive to imitate her “little way” of growing in holiness through the lenses of motherhood and family.

Weekly Praying for Priests

• A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.
• Here are the days/hours:Wednesdays at 10:30am – Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,   Thursdays at 12:30pm –  Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,First Friday of the month following 12pm Mass – Stations of the Cross with meditations for priests in the narthex.

Restore Weekly Confidential Meetings

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. Weekly Adoration

• COME AND ADORE OUR LORD! Eucharistic Adoration is held three times a week at OLM! In the book of Exodus, we read about Moses meeting God “face to face, as one man speaks to another” in the ‘Tent of Meeting.’ Just like Moses did 3,000 years ago, you and I have that very same opportunity for a face-to-face encounter with God to share what’s in our hearts, our joys, our worries, what’s troubling us right now, vetting it out with Jesus in the Eucharist. It is good to be with the Lord! It’s what we were created for. Whether we realize it or not, our hearts long for God and an awareness of His presence. He is our greatest good! And Jesus longs to reveal that goodness to us even more than we long to know Him. That’s why He took on flesh and became a man. That’s why He poured out His Holy Spirit. And that’s why He is truly and fully present in the Eucharist.
• So come and encounter Jesus anytime this week at Eucharistic Adoration on Mondays and Thursdays 8:30am to 6:30pm and Wednesdays 8am to 12pm.

Waterleaf Women’s Center Run for Life — 5K Run & Walk 9/9

• Take part in Waterleaf’s Run for Life at the Waubonsee Lake Park on Saturday September 9th at 8am.  Choose between 5K Run, 2.2 mile walk, or kids run. Register now to support the life-saving work of Waterleaf Women’s Center at this link.

Altar Server Training 9/10 & Senior Servers on 9/17

• Training for boys and girls who wish to become Altar Servers will take place in the Church on Sunday, September 10 from 3:30pm to 5pm.  Boys and girls who are registered in the parish and are in 5th grade or higher are eligible to become Altar Servers. 
• Training for current Altar Servers who wish to become Senior Servers will take place in the Church on Sunday, September 17 from 4pm to 5pm. Current Altar Servers that are in 8th grade or higher are eligible to move to Senior Server. Any current server who would like a “refresher course” on Altar Serving is encouraged to attend as well.

OCIA Begins on 9/11

• Are you interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the process to become Catholic? Or are you curious about what initiation for adults means?
  Our blessed Lord Jesus Christ said to Matthew “Follow me” and he rose and followed him. For Catholics, we respond in a similar way. The Christian way of life and becoming Catholic goes through a process of initiation, which is falling in love with Jesus and becoming His disciple. Through weekly meetings, we strive to help people learn how to respond to the prompting of God in their lives.
  The best way to learn is by doing Catholic things and hanging around other Catholics. The way to practice being a Catholic and enter into this process is through entering a way of life, as an apprentice learns from a master and that master’s community.
  Our blessed Lord Jesus is our master and becoming Catholic is a lot like being His apprentices. We call this process the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults often referred to as OCIA. It involves encountering the Word of God through the liturgies and personal study, engaging in a vibrant community at Our Lady of Mercy, worship with fellow believers in Christ, learning to pray and be of service to others.
• Meetings will take the form of classes on Monday evenings at 7pm led by our pastor, Fr. Michael Kearney, and parochial vicar, Fr. Frank Pusateri, and an invitation to fellowship gatherings on Sunday mornings starting with the 10am Mass.

Mondays with Monica & Augustine Prayer Group starts 9/11

• Do the following resonate with you?
  • I’ve experienced grief/heartache of watching a loved one leave the Faith.
  • I’ve offered prayers for the conversion of children and grandchildren living contrary to the Catholic Faith.
  • I’m navigating letting go of anger and unforgiveness so as to allow my heart to be filled with peace and comfort.
  • I am learning / or want to learn how to set an example of faith that draws non-believers to Catholicism.
• If you have ever loved someone who left the Faith, you know the ache of wanting that person back at the table. You pine for them at Mass, you miss their presence, and even wonder, How could life in Heaven be happy if the one I love is not present? When we feel this ache, the one intimately known to Saint Monica for years, we begin to learn how to love as God loves.
• Saint Monica experienced all this so acutely with her son, who eventually became a saint, Saint Augustine. At “Mondays with Monica and Augustine Prayer Group” we follow the example of Saint Monica, whose prayers, tears, and witness led to the conversion of both her husband and her son and turn to prayer for our loved ones.

• While registration is not required, it would be wonderful if you could register so as to help us be prepared to welcome you (have enough prayer guides for everyone etc.) Saints Monica and Augustine, pray for us and our loved ones dear to our hearts who have followed different paths.

Vine & Branches Informational Sessions 9/13 & 9/20

• We all have experienced broken relationships, as you are aware of the stats on divorce, many of us have experienced this in our families. This form of brokenness can isolate and separate us from our communities, including communities of faith. Vine and Branches Grow Group is a place to help people find healing will be hosting the Ascension Press program called “Surviving Divorce”.
  It features twelve video presentations that cover topics such as shock and grief, anger and forgiveness, money issues, dealing with children and a former spouse, and annulment and remarriage.  Check out this video for detailed information on topics and presenters.

Baptism Ministers Training 9/14

• We are looking for individuals or couples who are interested in becoming a Baptism Minister. Please consider helping out at this most important and beautiful ministry.
  • Baptism Ministers serve once a month either on a Saturday from 11:15AM-1:30PM or a Sunday from 1:15-3:30PM.
  • Ministers assist the families who are bringing their child to be baptized by offering hospitality and welcoming each family and child into the Catholic Church.
  • In addition to greeting and welcoming the families, Baptism Ministers set up for the baptism, assist the celebrant during the ceremony, and clean up after the ceremony.

The Reliquaries of St. Therese and her parents are coming to the National Shrine in Darien 9/17 through 10/1

• The Centennial Reliquary of St. Therese and Reliquary of her parents, Saints Louis and Zelie Martin, will be visiting the National Shrine of St. Therese in Darien, Illinois from September 17 to October 1, 2023.  
• They will have daily Masses at 11:30 AM and special programs each day from 2pm to 4pm.

Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima Parish Visitation 9/19 & 9/20

• Spreading the Message of Fatima TodayOur Lady travels the worldThe world-famous International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima is recognized as the primary way in which the message of Fatima spread throughout the world and continues today.Sculpted by Jose Thedim—“the Michelangelo of Portugal”—the statue has been traveling internationally since 1947.  On October 13, 1947, in the presence of 200,000 pilgrims at Fatima, the statue was blessed by the Bishop of Lieria-Fatima and commissioned to serve as the Pilgrim Virgin.  The bishop prayed that Mary herself accompany the statue wherever it goes.  She was then flown to America, where she was crowned in Ottawa, Canada, and began a 2-year tour of Canada and the U.S.She has since traveled to over 100 countries, claiming her dominion and carrying Fatima’s blessings and urgent message to people worldwide. Our Lady travels the U.S.The National Pilgrim Virgin Statue was given to the United States by the bishop of Fatima after being blessed by Pope St. Paul VI in 1967. She was crowned by Cardinal O’Boyle at the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC in 1971.  This statue travels across the United States under the sponsorship of the  World Apostolate of Fatima, USA. Saint Peregrine Prayer Service 9/19

• All are invited to attend the St. Peregrine Prayer Service on Tuesday, 9/19 in the PLC after the 6:30pm Mass (at 7pm), check the screens for room details.
• St. Peregrine is the patron saint of the sick, especially those experiencing cancer, serious illness, or chronic illness. Anyone experiencing physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual health concerns would benefit from attending the prayer service. The relic of St. Peregrine will be present.

Catholic Charities Mobile Food Pantry 9/20

• The Mobile Food Pantry is on Weds 9/20 from 4:30pm to 6pm.  Don’t forget to share the Our Lady of Mercy social media posting on your network; you never know who among your network is in need of food.
• The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Mobile Food Pantry delivers healthy food (meat, produce, and non-perishable items) to people in need. No identification or information will be required or collected. This event is open to anyone in need of food! Mobile Food Pantries use a “drive-thru” method to distribute food. Please clear space in your trunk or backseat so volunteers can load boxes of food directly into your vehicle. Catholic Charities helps people of all faiths and beliefs. Mobile Food Pantries take place snow, rain, or shine!

1st Annual Retreat for Parents/Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities 9/23

• The Diocese of Joliet Disabilities Ministry is holding a retreat for parents/caregivers of persons with disabilities which will take place on Saturday, 9/23 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, 8040 Cass Avenue, Darien. There will be Mass, confessions, a speaker, and breakout sessions.

Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit 9/27 thru 10/4

• “The Eucharistic Miracles of the World” will return on Wednesday, September 27th through Tuesday, October 4th. Eucharistic miracles can be useful and fruitful aids to our faith. They help us go beyond the visible and the percetible.

Blessing of the Animals 10/7

• We are paws-itively excited about our annual Pet Blessing this weekend! Join us on Saturday, October 7th at 12pm in the circle drive to have your pet blessed, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi!
  
  St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, gained special recognition for his love of nature and animals, and many stories tell of him “preaching to the birds” when a group of noisy swallows was disturbing his preaching. The birds immediately fell silent and stood all around him, listening intently as he spoke of God’s majesty.

Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day Memorial Service 10/15

• Please save the date on Sunday, October 15th, after the 10am Mass for a memorial service by the monument near the outdoor Stations of the Cross in our parish grounds.
• The beautiful monument, donated by the Sincora and Savoie Families in loving memory of Rose Christine Sincora, is shaped like an expectant mother, and remembers our littlest babies in heaven while giving families and friends a place to remember babies who were so wanted and are forever loved and missed.

Undy Sunday Collection Weekend 10/14 & 10/15

• Most people take things like underwear for granted. At Catholic Charities, we have found that low-income families and seniors living on poverty-level incomes do not spend money on underwear and desperately need it.Last year, 50 parishes, schools, and organizations participated in the program. The collection makes a huge difference in the lives of our clients, and we pray that we can provide these much-needed items again this year.

Bringing Holy Communion to Your Loved One that is Homebound

• Do you have a loved one that is homebound?
  Ministers of Care are trained in the ministry and commissioned by the parish to visit those unable to come to Church to receive Holy Communion. Ministers visit the homebound, those in hospitals, and other care facilities to pray with them, bring the Eucharist and serve as a caring, listening presence. The Ministers of Care Ministry is a visible sign of the presence of the Church in our lives and continues the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

• Caring for a Loved One with Mary” by Theresa Kiser is in the book kiosk. Completely occupied by the constant care necessary for her son’s medically complex situation, Theresa Kiser struggled to reconcile with the physical, emotional, social, and mental tolls it took on her family. But when she stumbled upon the devotion of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, she was surprised — and deeply relieved — to discover that Our Lady walked this caregiving road before her. Join the OLM Mixed Bowling League! (August through May)

• You need not be a good bowler. You only need to come out and enjoy some safe time out with fellow parishioners for one Friday a month. If you have thought about joining a league, now is the time to give it a try. If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we provided assistance to 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.
• The ministry is always looking for volunteers to join our St. Vincent de Paul Society in assisting our neighbors in need. If you would like to volunteer or learn more, send an email to olmsvdp@gmail.com with your name and contact information.

From the P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)

Sometimes we come across a Gospel reading where we initially hear it and don’t know how to react!  The Sunday reading of Jesus initially rejecting the Canaanite woman is perhaps one of them. We may see Jesus’s treatment and response to her harsh and difficult to comprehend. Isn’t our faith in Jesus Christ based on his willingness to die for EVERYONE? Why does Jesus ignore this woman and then compare the Canaanite people to dogs? 

I’m sure there are various ways to approach this Gospel passage. One approach is to ask the question, “Could Jesus be testing the woman’s perseverance even in the midst of persecution, which is something the Apostles will eventually have to learn themselves?” I, however, would like to approach today’s Gospel with this main proposition about our own brokenness:  When God’s actions don’t match up with our will, we seem to always perceive God’s actions as harsh and questionable.  

Have you ever wanted God to act or respond to a problem in your life? And what happened when your prayers were not answered in the ways you wanted them to?  Did you throw a fit? (As I have done many times) Did you feel like God didn’t have a plan for you, let alone love you? 

Yet, what is clear throughout the Scriptures is that God loves all of us and desires to bring salvation, not only to the Israelites, but to all people (cf. 1 Tim 2:4). We fail in our perception of God’s plan in not understanding that God doesn’t always act the way we want Him to. We don’t see God’s greater picture of salvation. Jesus Christ came to fulfill the covenants (promises) given to the Israelites first, and then spread salvation to the whole world.  Hence Christ said, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24). And then after his death and resurrection he said, “Go, therefore and make disciples of ALL NATIONS, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:16-20).  God’s plan from the very beginning was to bring all nations, including the Canaanite woman, into His Body the Church. Yet, in its proper time and way! 

Sometimes when God doesn’t act or respond the way we want Him too, we feel that God is harsh and unresponsive.  But what we need to realize is that the Lord’s love and plan is greater than our own.  He desires the good and salvation of all people, including you and me!  Let’s, yes, learn from the Canaanite woman in perseverance, but more importantly trust in the Lord when He doesn’t respond in the way we want Him too!

Saint Peregrine Prayer Service 8/22

• All are invited to attend the St. Peregrine Prayer Service on Tuesday, 8/22 in the church after the 6:30pm Mass (at 7pm) 
• St. Peregrine is the patron saint of the sick, especially those experiencing cancer, serious illness, or chronic illness. Anyone experiencing physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual health concerns would benefit from attending the prayer service. The relic of St. Peregrine will be present.

A Mother’s Heart Grow Group 8/24

Weekly Praying for Priests

• A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.
• Here are the days/hours:Wednesdays at 10:30am – Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,   Thursdays at 12:30pm –  Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,First Friday of the month following 12pm Mass – Stations of the Cross with meditations for priests in the narthex.

Restore weekly confidential meetings

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. Weekly Adoration

• COME AND ADORE OUR LORD! Eucharistic Adoration is held three times a week at OLM! This past week, our readings were about Moses meeting God “face to face, as one man speaks to another” in the ‘Tent of Meeting.’ Just like Moses did 3,000 years ago, you and I have that very same opportunity for a face-to-face encounter with God to share what’s in our hearts, our joys, our worries, what’s troubling us right now, vetting it out with Jesus in the Eucharist. It is good to be with the Lord! It’s what we were created for. Whether we realize it or not, our hearts long for God and an awareness of His presence. He is our greatest good! And Jesus longs to reveal that goodness to us even more than we long to know Him. That’s why He took on flesh and became a man. That’s why He poured out His Holy Spirit. And that’s why He is truly and fully present in the Eucharist.
• So come and encounter Jesus anytime this week at Eucharistic Adoration on Mondays and Thursdays 8:30am to 6:30pm and Wednesdays 8am to 12pm.

OCIA Begins on 9/11

• Are you interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the process to become Catholic? Or are you curious about what initiation for adults means?
  Our blessed Lord Jesus Christ said to Matthew “Follow me” and he rose and followed him. For Catholics, we respond in a similar way. The Christian way of life and becoming Catholic goes through a process of initiation, which is falling in love with Jesus and becoming His disciple. Through weekly meetings, we strive to help people learn how to respond to the prompting of God in their lives.
  The best way to learn is by doing Catholic things and hanging around other Catholics. The way to practice being a Catholic and enter into this process is through entering a way of life, as an apprentice learns from a master and that master’s community.
  Our blessed Lord Jesus is our master and becoming Catholic is a lot like being His apprentices. We call this process the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults often referred to as OCIA. It involves encountering the Word of God through the liturgies and personal study, engaging in a vibrant community at Our Lady of Mercy, worship with fellow believers in Christ, learning to pray and be of service to others.
• Meetings will take the form of classes on Monday evenings at 7pm led by our pastor, Fr. Michael Kearney and parochial vicar, Fr. Frank Pusateri and an invitation to fellowship gatherings on Sunday mornings starting with the 10am Mass.

Mondays with Monica & Augustine Prayer Group starts 9/11

• If you have ever loved someone who left the Faith, you know the ache of wanting that person back at the table. You pine for them at Mass, you miss their presence, and even wonder, How could life in Heaven be happy if the one I love is not present? When we feel this ache, the one intimately known to Saint Monica for years, we begin to learn how to love as God loves.
• Saint Monica experienced all this so acutely with her son, who eventually became a saint, Saint Augustine. At “Mondays with Monica and Augustine Prayer Group” we follow the example of Saint Monica, whose prayers, tears, and witness led to the conversion of both her husband and her son and turn to prayer for our loved ones.

Bringing Holy Communion to Your Loved One that is Homebound

• Do you have a loved one that is homebound?
  Ministers of Care are trained in the ministry and commissioned by the parish to visit those unable to come to Church to receive Holy Communion. Ministers visit the homebound, those in hospitals, and other care facilities to pray with them, bring the Eucharist and serve as a caring, listening presence. The Ministers of Care Ministry is a visible sign of the presence of the Church in our lives and continues the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

• Caring for a Loved One with Mary” by Theresa Kiser is in the book kiosk. Completely occupied by the constant care necessary for her son’s medically complex situation, Theresa Kiser struggled to reconcile with the physical, emotional, social, and mental tolls it took on her family. But when she stumbled upon the devotion of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, she was surprised — and deeply relieved — to discover that Our Lady walked this caregiving road before her. The Seven Sorrows devotion nourished her soul with comfort, companionship, and grace at a time when she needed it most.

Join the OLM Mixed Bowling League! (August through May)

• You need not be a good bowler. You only need to come out and enjoy some safe time out with fellow parishioners for one Friday a month. If you have thought about joining a league, now is the time to give it a try. The Power of the Invitation

• Did you know that
  • 500 people who read a Catholic newspaper article about a parish gathering: one will come (0.2%).
  • 100 people who read about a gathering in the Sunday Bulletin: one will come (1%).
  • 50 people who hear an announcement at church: one will come (2%).
  • 25 people who see a video clip of someone sharing a story: one will come (4%).
• But for every:
  • 5 people that are invited personally to attend: one will come (20%)!
• That’s a BIG difference.  To put it simply: while we need to make the announcements, send emails and postings of Alpha to a lot of people in different ways, at the end of the day, inviting people personally is the most effective way for bringing people to Jesus. Just look at how Andrew invited Peter to come and meet Jesus, that invitation was so simple and powerful that its ripple effects of grace is felt to this very day.
• The question then becomes do you know of Catholics and non-Catholics who feel disconnected or disengaged with their faith; please invite them to Alpha this coming season. Why invite people Alpha? Because each and every person deserves the opportunity to hear the life-saving news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to bring healing, foritude, friendship, fulfillment and transformation.

Catholic Charities Mobile Food Pantry 9/20

• The Mobile Food Pantry is on Weds 9/20 from 4:30pm to 6pm.  Don’t forget to share the Our Lady of Mercy social media posting on your network; you never know who among your network is in need of food.
• The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Mobile Food Pantry delivers healthy food (meat, produce, and non-perishable items) to people in need. No identification or information will be required or collected. This event is open to anyone in need of food! Mobile Food Pantries use a “drive-thru” method to distribute food. Please clear space in your trunk or backseat so volunteers can load boxes of food directly into your vehicle. Catholic Charities helps people of all faiths and beliefs. Mobile Food Pantries take place snow, rain, or shine!

1st Annual Retreat for Parents/Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities 9/23

• The Diocese of Joliet Disabilities Ministry is holding a retreat for parents/caregivers of persons with disabilities which will take place on Saturday, 9/23 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, 8040 Cass Avenue, Darien. There will be Mass, confessions, a speaker, and breakout sessions.

If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we provided assistance to 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.

From the P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)

“I got you!”… I know that it’s probably not the most grammatically correct saying out there. It might be better to say, “I have your back.” Nonetheless, these are the words that come to my mind as I reflect on the Transfiguration of Jesus in today’s Gospel: “I got you!”

The Transfiguration is the point where Jesus reveals to Peter, James, and John his divine nature, but also his kingly status. This harkens back to the first reading from the Prophet Daniel: “The one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship; all peoples, nations, and languages serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed” (Daniel 7:13-14). A king, especially in the Old Testament, was made king because he would protect his people. As we also heard proclaimed in the psalm, “the Lord is King”! The Lord is going to do everything in his power to protect us.

Peter, James, and John see Jesus “transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light” (Mt. 17:2). Later, “a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him’” (Mt. 17:5). With this glimpse of his divine and kingly nature, the disciples are given strength to endure not only the crucifixion, but also are given strength for their future ministries. The Lord is King and has already won the battle.

As we celebrate the Transfiguration, know that Jesus desires for us to have the same personal encounter with him that his apostles experienced in the Gospel. That way, whatever crosses may come, we will know in a profound way that Jesus Christ is King and is willing to fight and die for us!

After the Transfiguration, Jesus walks down the mountain with Peter, James, and John and tells them to “not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Mt.17:9). Ultimately, the Transfiguration reveals the Lord’s divine plan and his desire for us to join him in the coming resurrection as well. When things get difficult, I just keep hearing Jesus Christ saying in response, “I got you!”

Praying for Fr Don—Most Recent Journal Entry as of 8/5

Friends,

Fr. Don is resting peacefully.  He had been extremely restless and had episodes of agitation. That has subsided and he finally is calm.  The doctor has him on a regular schedule of medications to help keep him calm.  

He has been comforted by the many email notes he has received.  I have been able to read them to him even though he is not awake.   His phone and iPad are turned off now.

His great-nephew, Matt, drove from Arkansas to be with Fr. Don the last two days.  Today, his nephew Dan, will be with him this afternoon.  He even visited with his dear friend, Tony, from California.  

I do believe Fr. Don can feel your prayers and your love now.  He is making the transition from this earthly life to his eternal life.  Please pray this transition continues peacefully for him.

I have been humbled by the stories about Fr. Don’s ministry to so many people throughout his 41 years of being a priest.  He did not share these stories with me, but some of you have now.  How you met him and what he has meant to you!   He has had an amazing life filled with all of you!  Thank you!  I know he has told me how grateful he was for his life and all of the blessings he has experienced.

Please continue to pray for our Fr. Don.  He needs you now.

Catholic Charities Back to School Fair 8/9

• Catholic Charities’ Back to School Fairs help prepare children from low-income households for a new school year by providing a variety of services, including free school supplies! The Back to School Fair will be held as a drive-through. Pre-registration for the Fair is mandatory. Please spread the word to families that belong to DuPage County. • A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. Weekly Adoration

• COME AND ADORE OUR LORD! Eucharistic Adoration is held three times a week at OLM! This past week, our readings were about Moses meeting God “face to face, as one man speaks to another” in the ‘Tent of Meeting.’ Just like Moses did 3,000 years ago, you and I have that very same opportunity for a face-to-face encounter with God to share what’s in our hearts, our joys, our worries, what’s troubling us right now, vetting it out with Jesus in the Eucharist. It is good to be with the Lord! It’s what we were created for. Whether we realize it or not, our hearts long for God and an awareness of His presence. He is our greatest good! And Jesus longs to reveal that goodness to us even more than we long to know Him. That’s why He took on flesh and became a man. That’s why He poured out His Holy Spirit. And that’s why He is truly and fully present in the Eucharist.
• So come and encounter Jesus anytime this week at Eucharistic Adoration on Mondays and Thursdays 8:30am to 6:30pm and Wednesdays 8am to 12pm.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) continues on 8/13 at the 10am Mass

• What is CLOW? The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a beautiful and meaningful experience designed specifically for our young ones. Through storytelling, interactive discussions, and age-appropriate activities, children have the opportunity to deepen their connection to faith and spirituality. The scriptures are brought to life in a manner that resonates with their hearts and minds, allowing them to grasp the timeless teachings and wisdom contained within. By creating a space that is inviting and inclusive, we hope to instill a love for God’s Word within each child, nurturing their spiritual growth and helping them discover the beauty and significance of their own faith journey. Sometime after the beginning of Mass, Father invites all children to participate in CLOW. The children joyfully return to rejoin their families, just before the Eucharistic Prayers take place, ensuring a shared celebration of faith for the entire congregation.

Catholic Charities Mobile Food Pantry 8/16

• The Mobile Food Pantry is on Weds 8/16 from 4:30pm to 6pm.  Don’t forget to share the Our Lady of Mercy social media posting on your network; you never know who among your network is in need of food.
• The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Mobile Food Pantry delivers healthy food (meat, produce, and non-perishable items) to people in need. No identification or information will be required or collected. This event is open to anyone in need of food! Mobile Food Pantries use a “drive-thru” method to distribute food. Please clear space in your trunk or backseat so volunteers can load boxes of food directly into your vehicle. Catholic Charities helps people of all faiths and beliefs. Mobile Food Pantries take place snow, rain, or shine!

Saint Peregrine Prayer Service 8/22

Women Volunteers Needed for Dominican Literacy Center – Training is on 
8/15, 8/22, 8/24

• The Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora will train new tutor volunteers for its literacy program in August. Female volunteers (with high school diplomas) are trained to help women students learn to read, write, and speak English. Tutoring sessions are 90 minutes, once a week, from September through May, at 260 Vermont St., Aurora (behind St. Therese Church). 
• Tutors do not need to speak Spanish or have teaching experience, but all volunteers must attend 3 training sessions and view several training videos online. OCIA Begins in September!

• Are you interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the process to become Catholic? Or are you curious about what initiation for adults means?
  Our blessed Lord Jesus Christ said to Matthew “Follow me” and he rose and followed him. For Catholics, we respond in a similar way. The Christian way of life and becoming Catholic goes through a process of initiation, which is falling in love with Jesus and becoming His disciple. Through weekly meetings, we strive to help people learn how to respond to the prompting of God in their lives.
  The best way to learn is by doing Catholic things and hanging around other Catholics. The way to practice being a Catholic and enter into this process is through entering a way of life, as an apprentice learns from a master and that master’s community.
  Our blessed Lord Jesus is our master and becoming Catholic is a lot like being His apprentices. We call this process the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults often referred to as OCIA. It involves encountering the Word of God through the liturgies and personal study, engaging in a vibrant community at Our Lady of Mercy, worship with fellow believers in Christ, learning to pray and be of service to others.
• Meetings will take the form of classes on Monday evenings led by our pastor, Fr. Michael Kearney and parochial vicar, Fr. Frank Pusateri and an invitation to fellowship gatherings on Thursday evenings starting in September.

The Power of the Invitation

• Did you know that
  500 people who read a Catholic newspaper article about a parish gathering: one will come (0.2%).
  100 people who read about a gathering in the Sunday Bulletin: one will come (1%).
  50 people who hear an announcement at church: one will come (2%).
  25 people who see a video clip of someone sharing a story: one will come (4%).
• But for every:
  5 people that are invited personally to attend: one will come (20%)!
• That’s a BIG difference.  To put it simply: while we need to make the announcements, send emails and postings of Alpha to a lot of people in different ways, at the end of the day, inviting people personally is the most effective way for bringing people to Jesus. Just look at how Andrew invited Peter to come and meet Jesus, that invitation was so simple and powerful that its ripple effects of grace is felt to this very day.
• The question then becomes do you know of Catholics and non-Catholics who feel disconnected or disengaged with their faith; please invite them to Alpha this coming season. Why invite people Alpha? Because each and every person deserves the opportunity to hear the life-saving news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to bring healing, foritude, friendship, fulfillment and transformation.

If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we provided assistance to 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.

From the P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)

Did you know that in St. Matthew’s Gospel the word “kingdom” is used 50 times? This includes the 28 times that he mentions the “Kingdom of Heaven”. Maybe St. Matthew wanted us to know not only about the Kingdom of Heaven, but also about our King! In our Gospel this weekend, we hear several parables of the Kingdom of Heaven, which leads me to the following reflection. 

When we talk about Heaven, we can have a tendency to only point to the future. We are not in Heaven, so it is tempting to either wait for the time when the Lord calls us there or keep it out of sight and mind. We fail to see what is being offered to us in the Gospel today, namely the reality that the Kingdom of Heaven is also here and now. 

Through his parables, Jesus reveals that the Kingdom of Heaven is not something we are waiting for, but something we are called to live in right now. He explains the parable of the weeds in the field by saying, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.” We are called to respond to his Word and live as children of the Kingdom of God here on earth. Salvation begins now, not when we get to Heaven. Jesus desires to give us fullness of life in our daily lives as we await Heaven with hope. Even in the face of temptation and hardship, we are called to bear fruit in our lives and to bring others to experience this same joy.

A few chapters later in Matthew’s Gospel, spoiler alert, Jesus will hand the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven to Simon Peter, who is appointed as the rock and foundation of the Church. The Church is an integral part of the Kingdom of Heaven and provides us with graces and sacraments that give us much needed strength to follow Jesus. The Church had humble beginnings, much like the mustard seed in the parables, and yet it is now a place of refuge for all to find shelter. 

Let us not ignore the Kingdom of Heaven, believing that it is something we will only experience in eternity, but instead respond to the Lord’s invitation to live fully with him in the present moment. May we experience the Kingdom of Heaven here and now at Our Lady of Mercy.

Prayer Ministry 7/29 & 7/30

• Receive Prayer Ministry after all the Mass times the weekend of 7/29 and 7/30! Prayer ministry is an opportunity for those in need of physical, emotional, or spiritual healing or with a specific intention. Come as an individual, as a couple, or as. a family and receive prayer for yourself or request prayers for someone in need. Listen and receive the prayers while being open to the Holy Spirit’s movement. Trained prayer ministers are available in the back of Church.

Simbang Gabi Filipino Street Food Fest 7/30

• Filipinos eat at least five times a day! Eating is our past time! Find out why – at the next Filipino Street Food Fair at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) on Sunday, July 30 from 10am to 2pm.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) continues on 7/30 at the 10am Mass

• What is CLOW? The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a beautiful and meaningful experience designed specifically for our young ones. Through storytelling, interactive discussions, and age-appropriate activities, children have the opportunity to deepen their connection to faith and spirituality. The scriptures are brought to life in a manner that resonates with their hearts and minds, allowing them to grasp the timeless teachings and wisdom contained within. By creating a space that is inviting and inclusive, we hope to instill a love for God’s Word within each child, nurturing their spiritual growth and helping them discover the beauty and significance of their own faith journey. Sometime after the beginning of Mass, Father invites all children to participate in CLOW. The children joyfully return to rejoin their families, just before the Eucharistic Prayers take place, ensuring a shared celebration of faith for the entire congregation.

Weekly Praying for Priests

• A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.
• Here are the days/hours:Wednesdays at 10:30am – Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,   Thursdays at 12:30pm –  Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,First Friday of the month following 12pm Mass – Stations of the Cross with meditations for priests in the narthex.

Restore weekly confidential meetings

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. Knights of Columbus Blood Drive 8/5

Charismatic Healing Mass 8/5

• On Saturday, 8/5 at 6pm is the Charismatic Healing Mass. A healing Mass is a normal Mass, but it has a special focus on God’s healing power; this will be reflected in the songs, prayers, and scripture readings. If you’re in need of God’s healing grace, come to the Charismatic Healing Mass.  

Women Volunteers Needed for Dominican Literacy Center – Training is on 
8/15, 8/22, 8/24

• The Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora will train new tutor volunteers for its literacy program in August. Female volunteers (with high school diplomas) are trained to help women students learn to read, write, and speak English. Tutoring sessions are 90 minutes, once a week, from September through May, at 260 Vermont St., Aurora (behind St. Therese Church). 
• Tutors do not need to speak Spanish or have teaching experience, but all volunteers must attend 3 training sessions and view several training videos online. The next training dates are August 15, 22, and 24, from 6pm to 8:30pm. To volunteer, email Alison Brzezinski at Alison@dominicanliteracycenter.org. Catholic Charities Back to School Fair 8/9

• Catholic Charities’ Back to School Fairs help prepare children from low-income households for a new school year by providing a variety of services, including free school supplies! OCIA Begins in September!

• Are you interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the process to become Catholic? Or are you curious about what initiation for adults means?
  Our blessed Lord Jesus Christ said to Matthew “Follow me” and he rose and followed him. For Catholics, we respond in a similar way. The Christian way of life and becoming Catholic goes through a process of initiation, which is falling in love with Jesus and becoming His disciple. Through weekly meetings, we strive to help people learn how to respond to the prompting of God in their lives.
  The best way to learn is by doing Catholic things and hanging around other Catholics. The way to practice being a Catholic and enter into this process is through entering a way of life, as an apprentice learns from a master and that master’s community.
  Our blessed Lord Jesus is our master and becoming Catholic is a lot like being His apprentices. We call this process the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults often referred to as OCIA. It involves encountering the Word of God through the liturgies and personal study, engaging in a vibrant community at Our Lady of Mercy, worship with fellow believers in Christ, learning to pray and be of service to others.
• Meetings will take the form of classes on Monday evenings led by our pastor, Fr. Michael Kearney and parochial vicar, Fr. Frank Pusateri and an invitation to fellowship gatherings on Thursday evenings starting in September.

If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we assisted 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.

From the P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)

It’s amazing how we can learn a lot about our faith by reflecting through the eyes of a child. Jesus says as much in our Gospel this weekend: “For although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, you have revealed them to little ones.” 

Think about this, for instance: What were your first words as a child? You probably don’t even remember them, but that’s okay, because you could probably make a good guess. Mom and Dad were our everything as toddlers—so much so that they were the foremost things on our minds and in our words. We really couldn’t understand ourselves or the world apart from them.

As beings made in the image and likeness of a trinitarian God—a God whose essence is relational—this doesn’t surprise us. Our essence and identity too is inherently relational. This explains why Christ talks about his relationship with his Father in heaven immediately after talking about the wisdom of children. Children come to know who they are because of their relationship to their parents. We come to know who we are because of our relationship to our Heavenly Father.

Hence why we are pursuing a family-centered faith formation process for our children! If we truly want our children to better understand themselves in light of their heavenly Father, it is most effectively passed on through catechesis of their earthly parents. If children learn to walk, talk, and do just about everything else essential for life from their parents, why not also the most essential thing of all? 

God revealed that He is a loving communion of persons. May the communion of our families be at the heart of where our children come to know communion with our loving God.

First Saturday Devotion 7/1

• 1st Saturday 7/1 after the 8:30 am Mass is the First Saturday Devotion  
  • This devotion is one of the principal points of the Fatima message.  It consists of the following, on 5 consecutive first Saturdays: Going to Confession, receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, praying five decades of the Rosary, and Meditating for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary.

Weekly Praying for Priests

• A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.
• Here are the days/hours:Wednesdays at 10:30am – Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,   Thursdays at 12:30pm –  Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,First Friday of the month following 12pm Mass – Stations of the Cross with meditations for priests in the narthex.

Restore weekly confidential meetings

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) continues on 7/16 at the 10am Mass

• What is CLOW? The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a beautiful and meaningful experience designed specifically for our young ones. Through storytelling, interactive discussions, and age-appropriate activities, children have the opportunity to deepen their connection to faith and spirituality. The scriptures are brought to life in a manner that resonates with their hearts and minds, allowing them to grasp the timeless teachings and wisdom contained within. By creating a space that is inviting and inclusive, we hope to instill a love for God’s Word within each child, nurturing their spiritual growth and helping them discover the beauty and significance of their own faith journey. Sometime after the beginning of Mass, Father invites all children to participate in CLOW. The children joyfully return to rejoin their families, just before the Eucharistic Prayers take place, ensuring a shared celebration of faith for the entire congregation.

• Founded by Fr. Burke Masters, pastor at St. Isaac’s in Hinsdale and Cubs Chaplain, Catholic Sports Camps wants to bring the love of Christ to kids and KIDS LOVE SPORTS! St. Peregrine Prayer Service 7/18

• All are invited to attend the St. Peregrine Prayer Service on Tuesday, 7/18 in the church after the 6:30pm Mass (at 7pm) with Deacon Tony Leazzo.
• St. Peregrine is the patron saint of the sick, especially those experiencing cancer, serious illness, or chronic illness. Anyone experiencing physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual health concerns would benefit from attending the prayer service. The relic of St. Peregrine will be present.

Catholic Charities Mobile Food Pantry 7/19

• The Mobile Food Pantry is on Weds 7/19 from 4:30pm to 6pm.  Don’t forget to share the Our Lady of Mercy social media posting on your network; you never know who among your network is in need of food.
• The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Mobile Food Pantry delivers healthy food (meat, produce, and non-perishable items) to people in need. No identification or information will be required or collected. This event is open to anyone in need of food! Mobile Food Pantries use a “drive-thru” method to distribute food. Please clear space in your trunk or backseat so volunteers can load boxes of food directly into your vehicle. Catholic Charities helps people of all faiths and beliefs. Mobile Food Pantries take place snow, rain, or shine!

MAGNIFY Adoration Night 7/19

• This summer season, deepen your relationship with Jesus by discovering the healing power of eucharistic adoration, praise, and worship at MAGNIFY.  Contemplate in silence the scriptural reflection, Confession, and prayer ministry are opportunities for spiritual nourishment, finding peace and solace in the presence of Jesus. St. Vincent DePaul Clothing Drive 7/22 & 7/23

• The St. Vincent dePaul (SVDP) truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of July 22 & 23 for our Clothing Drive!! Please pick up the SVDP white donation bags found in the atrium entrance and drop them off before and after the 4pm Mass on Saturday and Sunday until noon. 
• We will accept clothing, shoes, linens and books in good or bad condition. Unusable clothing, shoes, linens, and even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk. 
• No baby equipment such as cribs, walkers, strollers, playpens, etc. ALL BABY CLOTHES ACCEPTED 
• Small housewares and electronics – dishes, glassware, utensils, toasters, blenders, coffee makers, radios, cd players etc. SORRY NO TELEVISIONS.
• For furniture and large item donations please call 630-231-4658 to schedule a home pickup at a later date or email us at – saintvincentdonate@gmail.com. 
• Your donations go to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shops, where many of your donations are given away free to needy families in the community. Some are sold reasonably at thrift shops so needy families can shop with dignity. “Proceeds” from the thrift shops go into a general assistance fund where St. Vincent DePaul. Clothing Drives at the churches help families with rent, mortgage, or utility assistance.

Women Volunteers Needed for Dominican Literacy Center – Training is on 8/15, 8/22, 8/24

• The Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora will train new tutor volunteers for its literacy program in August. Female volunteers (with high school diplomas) are trained to help women students learn to read, write, and speak English. Tutoring sessions are 90 minutes, once a week, from September through May, at 260 Vermont St., Aurora (behind St. Therese Church). 
• Tutors do not need to speak Spanish or have teaching experience, but all volunteers must attend 3 training sessions and view several training videos online. Catholic Charities Back to School Fair 8/9

If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we provided assistance to 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.

From the P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)

Oddly enough, one of the best parts of my two-week pilgrimage to France this month was returning to OLM and celebrating Sunday Mass with all of you. I felt more joy praying the Mass with the people whom I have come to know and love over the last three years than when I was visiting some of my favorite saints: St. Therese of Lisieux, St. John Vianney, and St. Bernadette of Lourdes to name a few. Maybe you find that hard to believe. Maybe that’s just the jet-lag speaking. True, saying Mass at the tombs of these heroes of our faith was a blessing I’ll never forget—I’d do it again in a heartbeat! But I think the Lord was telling me at 8am Mass last Sunday something along the lines of “there’s no place like home.”

People imagine that the priesthood is somehow extraordinarily demanding—that we must be so brave and selfless to give up a wife and children and money for the collar…but we’re not. I’m just as much a sinner in need of God’s grace as anyone else—slow to relinquish my preferences, slow to give God my heart, slow to trust that He’ll give me more than I give Him. I became a priest because God called me to, and what I found was the pearl of great price—what I pray all of you discover as well. That “whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matt 16:25)

The issue at hand is that we imagine that the opposite of the Gospel is true. We think, “Whoever preserves his life from the excessive demands of God will find it.” But to preserve oneself from God’s invitations, is to preserve oneself from love. Hence, “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matt 16:25)

It is certainly a big demand from God to me to have to leave here. I will always remember OLM, and yes, I will deeply miss it, because I will deeply miss you. I started tearing up months ago at the thought of leaving this place that has been my family and my joy! But I know that the Lord has good things in store for all of us.

With St. Paul, I hope that I have at least somewhat succeeded in living out the words: “what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” (2 Cor 4:5). Many times I have fallen short of living this out, so I humbly ask that you forgive me where I have fallen short. But above all, I must say, thank you… for your love, your friendship, and for blessing me over the last three years. I have learned so much here from Fr. Don, from Fr. Michael, and from all of you. The priesthood has been an inestimable gift to me. This assignment has been an inestimable gift to me. Serving you has been an inestimable gift to me. Please pray for us priests as we seek to lose our lives for His sake, as we try to help you to do the same!

Here is a note from Jolene Leroy

• In September 2000, I felt the Lord calling me to the parish nurse ministry. It allowed me to practice as a registered nurse in the faith community promoting the health and wellness of the mind, body and soul to those who reached out to me. The Lord helped me to meet people where they were at and be a companion providing physical, emotional and spiritual care. It has been a blessing to be on staff at Our Lady of Mercy as the parish nurse and pastoral care minister for over 22 years.
  
  I would like to thank Father Hugh Fullmer for believing in me and hiring me as the parish nurse and thank Father Don McLaughlin and Father Michael Kearney for supporting me in my role as I continued to serve. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who allowed me to minister to you, pray with you, cry with you, rejoice with you and become closer to the Lord with you. My relationship with Jesus has deepened because of witnessing your faith. You have helped me to learn about forgiveness, mercy, and humility through experiencing the joys and sorrows of life with you. My heart overflows with gratitude and love.
  
  As I feel the Lord nudging me to retire my position at the parish, I want you to know that I will continue to serve as a volunteer in pastoral care ministries. One of my favorite scripture passages encourages us to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). May this inspire you in your walk of faith as it has in mine. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers. May the Lord’s blessings be upon you!

First Saturday Devotion 7/1

• 1st Saturday 7/1 after the 8:30 am Mass is the First Saturday Devotion  
  • This devotion is one of the principal points of the Fatima message.  It consists of the following, on 5 consecutive first Saturdays: Going to Confession, receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, praying five decades of the Rosary, and Meditating for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary.

Weekly Praying for Priests

• A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.
• Here are the days/hours:Wednesdays at 10:30am – Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,   Thursdays at 12:30pm –  Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,First Friday of the month following 12pm Mass – Stations of the Cross with meditations for priests in the narthex.

Restore weekly confidential meetings

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. PADS Hesed House Hybrid Format of Donations Needed 

• Because our PADS/Hesed House Service Day falls on Tuesday, July 4th Independence Day, we will use a hybrid format in soliciting donations.
  The main meal and side dishes will be purchased with monetary donations, and the PADS Board will only be used to solicit non-perishable items and cleaning supplies. 
• In the spirit of brotherly love and charity, please make a monetary donation, to help cover the cost of purchasing meals for 250 guests at Hesed House. Monetary donations can be made via the OLM Online Giving Portal or on this link (please specify donation is for Hesed House), or make checks payable to Our Lady of Mercy Church, and write on the memo “Hesed House -PADS”.

Biblical Institute in the Diocese of Joliet (BIDJ) Preview Events 6/26, 7/24, 7/31 & onwards

Peter’s Pence Collection for the Holy Father 7/1 & 7/2

• Please see the following letter from Bishop Hicks regarding prayerfully considering supporting Peter’s Pence collection, which helps fund not only all the activities of the dicasteries of the Roman Curia that assist the pope in the exercise of his ministry but also a number of solidarity projects that aid those most in need such as when a 7.2 earthquake affected the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Pope Francis sent funds from Peter’s Pence to support immediate emergency relief efforts in the most affected dioceses of Haiti.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) resumes on 7/2

• We are thrilled to announce the resumption of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) during the 10am Sunday Mass, starting on July 2nd, and we couldn’t be more excited to have the children join us at CLOW
• What is CLOW? The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a beautiful and meaningful experience designed specifically for our young ones. Through storytelling, interactive discussions, and age-appropriate activities, children have the opportunity to deepen their connection to faith and spirituality. The scriptures are brought to life in a manner that resonates with their hearts and minds, allowing them to grasp the timeless teachings and wisdom contained within. By creating a space that is inviting and inclusive, we hope to instill a love for God’s Word within each child, nurturing their spiritual growth and helping them discover the beauty and significance of their own faith journey. Sometime after the beginning of Mass, Father invites all children to participate in CLOW. The children joyfully return to rejoin their families, just before the Eucharistic Prayers take place, ensuring a shared celebration of faith for the entire congregation.

Catholic Charities Mobile Food Pantry 7/19

• The Mobile Food Pantry is on Weds 7/19 from 4:30pm to 6pm.  Don’t forget to share the Our Lady of Mercy social media posting on your network; you never know who among your network is in need of food.
• The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Mobile Food Pantry delivers healthy food (meat, produce, and non-perishable items) to people in need. No identification or information will be required or collected. This event is open to anyone in need of food! Mobile Food Pantries use a “drive-thru” method to distribute food. Please clear space in your trunk or backseat so volunteers can load boxes of food directly into your vehicle. Catholic Charities helps people of all faiths and beliefs. Mobile Food Pantries take place snow, rain, or shine!

MAGNIFY Adoration Night 7/19

• This summer season, deepen your relationship with Jesus by discovering the healing power of eucharistic adoration, praise, and worship at MAGNIFY.  Contemplate in silence the scriptural reflection, Confession, and prayer ministry are opportunities for spiritual nourishment, finding peace and solace in the presence of Jesus. Quo Vadis Days 7/30 thru 8/2

• Please spread the word of the dynamic Quo Vadis Days on 7/30 through 8/2 run by the Vocation Offices of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Joliet. During this 4-day/3-night camp at the Mundelein Seminary, young men ages 13 to 18 will participate in powerful discussions, outdoor activities, sports, daily Mass, and Liturgy of the Hours.

Women Volunteers Needed for Dominican Literacy Center – Training is on 8/15, 8/22, 8/24

• The Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora will train new tutor volunteers for its literacy program in August. Female volunteers (with high school diplomas) are trained to help women students learn to read, write, and speak English. Tutoring sessions are 90 minutes, once a week, from September through May, at 260 Vermont St., Aurora (behind St. Therese Church). 
• Tutors do not need to speak Spanish or have teaching experience, but all volunteers must attend 3 training sessions and view several training videos online. Catholic Charities Back to School Fair 8/9

• Catholic Charities’ Back to School Fairs help prepare children from low-income households for a new school year by providing a variety of services, including free school supplies!   Please note that Father Michael and Father James DO NOT send texts or emails asking for money or gift cards. If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we provided assistance to 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.
• The ministry is always looking for volunteers to join our St. Vincent de Paul Society in assisting our neighbors in need. If you would like to volunteer or learn more, send an email to olmsvdp@gmail.com with your name and contact information.

From the P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)

On Good Friday, Pontius Pilate was not the only one who had a choice to make. The very same choice was brought both to the people of the world then, as well as to the people of the world now. We may be unaware of this choice, but that’s why the Church, in her wisdom, has us hear Pontius Pilate pose the very same question to us on Palm Sunday. He brings before us the one called Jesus of Nazareth and the one known as Barabbas. The two seem like they couldn’t be more different until we recognize that Barabbas literally means “son of the father”. Here then, is our choice and question: Which son of the father will we follow? Will we choose to follow Jesus Christ, the son of the Father of sacrificial love, or will we follow Barabbas, the son of the father of the passions?

Surprisingly, we participate in the Palm Sunday liturgy by crying out, “Barabbas!” It’s a painful moment each year, no matter how many times we’ve done it because if we are honest with ourselves, we know that we all too often choose our own passions over our Lord. Like the crowds before Pilate, we, too, choose to act selfishly over being selfless. In a sense, whenever we choose sin, we once again choose Barabbas!

To admit this is hard. It’s very sobering. It, first of all, takes a certain about of self-awareness—and then, very quickly, a lot of humility. To be willing to look in the mirror and humbly submit our understanding of right vs. wrong to the God of all rather than to what we’d like to think is right or wrong. When we put aside our attempts at justifying ourselves and our actions, the reality is clear: in our human brokenness, we don’t always do what is right! St. Paul describes this experience so well: “What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.” (Rom 7:15). What then do we do? Do we just surrender, give up, and resign ourselves to a life of sin? NO! “You did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (Rom 8:15) In Christ we have forgiveness; in Christ we have hope. Just look at St. Peter! He himself, who was hand-picked by Jesus to be the rock upon which the Church was built, denied our Lord 3 times. The head of the apostles himself had at one point ‘chosen Barabbas’. Yet,

The Church is founded upon forgiveness. Peter himself is a personal embodiment of this truth! She is held together by forgiveness, and Peter is the perpetual living reminder of this reality: she is not a communion of the perfect but a communion of sinners who need and seek forgiveness. ~ Pope Benedict XVI

As we experience Palm Sunday, let us never be afraid to acknowledge our brokenness, seek forgiveness, and turn with confidence to our true Father through His one eternal Son!

Eucharistic Adoration during Holy Week

• Regular Eucharist Adoration on Monday and Wednesday will take place. However, on Thursday, there will not be Eucharistic Adoration. Instead, spend time with Jesus from 8:30pm through Midnight on Holy Thursday Repository; adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This is immediately following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Sign Up to Receive the Divine Mercy Novena starts on Good Friday 4/7

• Jesus asked that the Feast of Divine Mercy, known today as Divine Mercy Sunday which is on 4/16, be preceded by a Novena to The Divine Mercy. A Novena is nine days of prayer in preparation for a feast. In the case of the Novena to The Divine Mercy, we pray the Chaplet of The Divine Mercy each day for a specific intention. Our Lord told St. Faustina, “I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw … strength and refreshment and whatever grace they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death” (Diary, 1209).

Teen Living Stations of the Cross at the holy hour of 3pm on Good Friday 4/7

• Please join us on Good Friday, 4/7th at 3pm in the Our Lady of Mercy Church for a reflective portrayal of the Stations of the Cross of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ by the OLM Teen Youth Ministry. All family members are welcome to attend.

Pontifical Good Friday Collection 4/7

• Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land, where they are now less than 2% of the population. Your support is essential to help the Church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and offer religious education.
• The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines of Christianity, including in Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem, to name only a few. The pandemic hit Christians in the Holy Land particularly hard. Most of them depend on pilgrimages for work. In these times, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection is necessary to meet the basic needs of the People of God still living in this Land and to maintain a Christian presence where the Church was born. Weekly Praying for Priests

• A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.
• Here are the days/hours:Wednesdays at 10:30am – Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,   Thursdays at 12:30pm –  Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,First Friday of the month following 12pm Mass – Stations of the Cross with meditations for priests in the narthex.

Restore weekly confidential meetings

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. Hesed Coffeehouse Chat Event on 4/13

• On Thursday 4/13th from 4pm to 6pm, Hesed House is hosting a Coffehouse Chat Event at Java Plus located at 1677 Montgomery Road, Aurora.

Divine Mercy Feast Day 4/16

• In celebration of the Feast Day of Divine Mercy on Sunday 4/16, we will hold a beautiful celebratory service in the Church at 2pm. Our service will include prayer of the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy through song, a devotion that Jesus revealed in His numerous apparitions and revelations to Saint Faustina.
  “On that (Feast) Day, the depths of My mercy will be open to all …. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.”
  Our observance of the Divine Mercy Feast Day will include the following:
  • Sacrament of Reconciliation, 2pm to 4pm (Fathers Michael and James) 
  • Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Eucharistic Adoration starting at 2pm
  • Recitation of the Holy Rosary
  • Silent Meditation and Prayer
  • Taking of Personal Intentions for the Divine Mercy Chaplet
  • Recitation of the Chaplet (at the Hour of Jesus’ Death)
  • Blessing of participants’ Divine Mercy Images at the altar
  • Benediction, closing prayers to Jesus and Mary
  • Pamphlets featuring the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, as well as other resources, will be available, but participants should be sure to bring their Rosary!
  • *Also, on Good Friday morning (April 7), immediately after the 8am prayer service in the church, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited. It’s a great way to start your Good Friday observance and Divine Mercy Novena, which should include your recitation of the Chaplet and a Spiritual or Corporal Work of Mercy through April 16.

St. Peregrine Prayer Service 4/18

• All are invited to attend the in-person St. Peregrine Prayer Service on Tuesday, 4/18 in the church after the 6:30pm Mass (at 7pm) with Deacon Tony Leazzo and Jolene LeRoy.
• St. Peregrine is the patron saint of the sick, especially those experiencing cancer, serious illness, or chronic illness. Anyone experiencing physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual health concerns would benefit from attending the prayer service. The relic of St. Peregrine will be present.

Mobile Food Pantry 4/19

• The Mobile Food Pantry is on Weds 4/19th from 4:30pm to 6pm.  Don’t forget to share the Our Lady of Mercy social media posting on your network; you never know who among your network is in need of food.
• The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Mobile Food Pantry delivers healthy food (meat, produce, and non-perishable items) to people in need. No identification or information will be required or collected. This event is open to anyone in need of food! Mobile Food Pantries use a “drive-thru” method to distribute food. Please clear space in your trunk or backseat so volunteers can load boxes of food directly into your vehicle. Catholic Charities helps people of all faiths and beliefs. Mobile Food Pantries take place snow, rain, or shine!

Knights of Columbus Robert H. Weaver Scholarship Application Submit by 6/17

• Calling all High School Seniors at Our Lady of Mercy, applications for the 2023 Robert H Weaver Knights of Columbus College Scholarship program are now being accepted. If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Do you have a story to share of your time with Jesus in the Eucharist?

• In the Eucharist, Jesus wants to remind you that you are never alone, that He is with you. In your brokenness, sorrows, and frustrations, He is with you. In everything you face—when you’re tired, ready to give up, hanging on by a thread, Jesus says to you, “I AM HERE.”

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we provided assistance to 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.
• The ministry is always looking for volunteers to join our St. Vincent de Paul Society in assisting our neighbors in need. If you would like to volunteer or learn more, send an email to olmsvdp@gmail.com with your name and contact information.

From Father James . . .

With the woman at the well, it is unclear why she has had five husbands. The detail is not included because it’s really not that important. Rather, we find her in the same situation that we all find ourselves in: she is thirsting for authentic love—she is thirsting for God.

Unfortunately, we live in a fallen world without a lot of authentic love. In fact, cheapened love is all around us! One of its simplest and most prevalent forms is immodesty. Modesty keeps at the forefront that ‘I am more than my body, I am more than how attractive I am to others, I am first and most importantly a beloved child of God.’ Immodesty, on the other hand, cheapens love. For if modesty is about “protect[ing] the intimate center of the person,” then immodesty must be the opposite. (CCC 2521) This is because immodesty trains us to treat others (and ourselves!) as objects for use rather than persons to be sacrificed for. Thus, the Catechism says, “Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love.” (CCC 2522) It is an invitation to authentic love and to seeing the full dignity of the human person.

Matthew 5:8 reads, “Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.” Note, then, that this passage not only refers to seeing God Himself but even seeing God in others! For, when we see others and ourselves in light of our being beloved children of God, then we can more readily treat them as such.
We can therefore see that ‘purity of heart’ extends to much more than just our sexuality. Soren Kierkegaard’s book, Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing makes just this point in an interesting way: if we want heaven, if we want peace, if we want a heart that is undivided and filled, then we must give our entire hearts to one thing and one thing alone: God.

“You shall love the Lord your God with ALL your heart!” (Deut 6:5) “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matt 10:37) It seems harsh, it seems counterintuitive, but God needs to be number one—even before children and spouses, family and friends—not because He needs it, but because we need it.

Think about it. If God is my number one, I will love my spouse with the love of God. If God is my number one, I will be intimately acquainted with Beauty, Goodness, and Truth Himself and thus be able to lead my children to all those things. If God is my number one, I will know which path is best, which decision is most efficacious, and which lifestyle is the most meaningful.

Purity of heart is simplicity of heart—it is to will the one thing! It is the way to satisfy our thirst. The pure of heart will see God, and the pure of heart will find the fullness of love.

Let us aim to raise $8,000 so he can shave it all off for a worthy cause; to support our teens going on the Mission Trip this summer. (Did you know that the teens are individually responsible for the cost of the trip as well as the tools needed?) Donate online through Our Sunday Visitor platform here.
• Every moment we walk alongside a young person as they join in the work God is doing is an opportunity to affirm their purpose and celebrate their gifts.  You have the opportunity to walk alongside our teens in a simple and good way by supporting them financially to offset the costs of the Misson Trip, and any dollar amount is helpful.
• The cost for the trip is $650 per teen, and this amount includes not only the participant fee for the workcamp but all of the other common costs like transportation, rooming, meals at the camp, the free day activity, and other associated community costs.  Each teen is also responsible for bringing the tools.
• The teens will be working throughout the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan Workcamp to do various home repair projects for residents. They will demonstrate Jesus’ love and compassion in tangible ways, serving people in need while working on projects such as…
  – Building wheelchair ramps and handrails
  – Weatherizing homes and trailers
  – Reconstructing sagging porches
  – Significant painting projects
  – Interior and exterior carpentry
  – Other home repair projects that the homeowner cannot otherwise complete
• Please also keep our teens, parents, and volunteers in prayer, as they prepare for and go on the Mission Trip.  In a special way, let us pray for our teens for God to bless their quest for purpose, joining them in prayer on their journey to discover what God is doing in their lives.

UPDATE on IL legislation against Waterleaf from Fr. James

• Friends,
       THANK YOU! More than 8,000 witness slips were filed in opposition to HB 2463 compared with barely 2,000 for the proponents.  The outpouring of prayers to support Waterleaf and the pushback against this attempt to eliminate pregnancy centers like Waterleaf was clearly successful since the bill did not even make it into discussion because of the overwhelming opposition! Praise God! The fight is certainly not over, but it is encouraging to see how much your assistance has helped!—whether in filling out a witness slip or offering prayers and fasts.
            We most likely will be asking you to sign witness slips again for the identical Senate bill, SB 1909.  In the meantime, THANK YOU, and keep up the prayers!

St. Peregrine Prayer Service on Tuesday 3/14

• The monthly prayer service will be on Tuesday, 3/14th at 7pm (after the 6:30pm Mass) in the church led by Deacon Tony Leazzo. Come together to support one another in prayer and presence.
• St. Peregrine is the patron saint of the sick, especially those experiencing cancer, serious illness, or chronic illness. Anyone experiencing physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual health concerns would benefit from attending the prayer service. There will be time after the service to venerate the relic of St. Peregrine and pray for your personal needs or intentions.

Consuming Fire on Tuesday 3/14

• All young adults are invited to join the Consuming Fire Young Adult Community. This group meets every Tuesday from 7pm to 8:30pm. We gather to eat, pray, and ‘do life together’!

• The Catholic Bible Study on The Chosen will host the Hallow App co-founder as he talks about the App’s Lenten offering leading up to Holy Week of a deeper dive into “The Stations of the Cross with Jonathan Roumie and Jim Caviziel” on the Hallow App.

Catholic Charities Mobile Food Pantry on Wednesday 3/15

• This month’s Mobile Food Pantry is on Weds 3/15th from 4:30pm to 6pm in the parking lot at OLM.  Don’t forget to share the Our Lady of Mercy social media posting on your network; you never know who among your network is in need of food. (Here are shareable links to an Instagram post, Facebook post).
• The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Mobile Food Pantry delivers healthy food (meat, produce, and non-perishable items) to people in need. No identification or information will be required or collected. This event is open to anyone in need of food! Mobile Food Pantries use a “drive-thru” method to distribute food during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please clear space in your trunk or backseat so volunteers can load boxes of food directly into your vehicle. Catholic Charities helps people of all faiths and beliefs. Mobile Food Pantries take place rain or shine!

The Rescue Project on Thursday 3/16

• We head into Week 4 on our parish-wide journey at The Rescue Project (TRP), where the talk titled “It Gets Worse” helps us to understand what the dire predicament every single human person is in and why we need someone to rescue us.
• Thus far, a fully packed gym of TRP Participants experiencing the gospel surrounded by food, conversation and prayer have been increasingly transformative. Please keep them and the team in your lenten prayers. You can view the recap of week 1 and week 2 on our social media platforms!

Lenten Movie Night on Love & Mercy 3/17

• This is a great way to understand the Divine Mercy movement, how it was born, and how it was spread. The film also reveals new information from scientific analyses of the image of the Divine Mercy as it compares to the Shroud of Turin, proving St. Faustina did indeed see Christ.

Weekly Praying for Priests

• A prayer group has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for over a year now, as well as on First Fridays. With Lent approaching, these prayer gatherings could be an offering of prayer/sacrifice. Even if you can’t join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the times below.

• Restore is a ministry that accompanies men so as to win the battle against the struggles of living a lust-free life.
• The ministry meets at a weekly (anonymous) meeting where men lean on each other for support and accountability and share ideas about strengthening their resolve to stay on God’s path of chastity.  All men are welcome, whether you have been free of the addiction for many years or struggle with it every single day. Arts & Environment Accompaniment During Lent

• We are blessed at Our Lady of Mercy by the blessing of the creative talent of our Arts & Environment team. With each liturgical season, this amazing team of volunteers (Annie Clark, Jeanne Daill, Linda Eickhoff, Betsy Utterback just to name several) led by Marty Kadziela transforms our beautiful church and surrounding spaces so we can enter the liturgical season with our visual senses accompanied.
• In this liturgical season, among the artfully placed lenten visual inspirations, the Arts & Environment team has set the 7 Last Words of Jesus on the Cross adorning the church’s walls beneath each wall sconce light fixture. We invite you to use these lenten visuals to accompany you as you journey through Lent with Jesus. Reflections are also noted below; each picture below points you to a YouTube reflection. (We will post the rest in the next parish update).

The Father already knows what the Son is thinking, but through these words, the Father and Son invite us into their thinking. They make us aware that forgiveness is offered to us through this sacrifice, and that through forgiveness, we are freed from the sin and lies that trap us.

The penitent thief acknowledged his guilt and wickedness and was welcomed by Christ. We, too, can find salvation if we acknowledge our sinfulness.

Second collection for Catholic Relief Services on 3/19

• Dear Friends,
       Our diocese will take up the annual second collection for Catholic Relief Services on March 19, and it could not come at a more fortunate time.
       As the arm of the Catholic Church that helps the poor and vulnerable overseas, Catholic Relief Services plays a vital role during emergencies such as the earthquakes that occurred last month in Turkey and Syria. Catholic Relief Services immediately contacted its partners in those countries to provide safe shelter for individuals and families, and access to food, clean water and hygiene supplies.
       Your support of Catholic Relief Services funds organizations dedicated to aiding people affected by war and natural disasters, migrants and refugees in need of material and legal assistance, and people worldwide whose livelihoods are impacted by changing political and environmental conditions.

• Hosted by Fr. Matthew Alexander, formation and spiritual director at St. John Vianney Seminary since 2019.  Fr. Alexander previously served as the associate pastor of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Mundelein and as a formator at St. Joseph College Seminary in Chicago.  In 2010, Fr. Alexander received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy at Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH, and, in 2017, he completed his Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Mundelein Seminary.Fr Matthew is from the Chicagoland area and has greatly impacted Fr. Michael in his own use of the one wheel.  Fr. Matthew has strong opinions of deep-dish pizza and loves to play Ultimate Frisbee, among other sports, reading, listening to music, and camping.  Fr. Matthew has been trained in the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola and continues to teach classes at the seminary on how to pray and pay attention to movements of the heart.

If you receive a message appearing to be from Father Michael or Father James, please discard it, (any email that does not have “olmercy.old.diocesanweb.org” is a fake email) and DO NOT SEND ANY ELECTRONIC MONETARY AID.  No one on the staff will personally ask for money in whatever form (gift cards etc). If someone sends you a private message, asking for a donation of sorts, it’s undoubtedly a fake account. Please keep praying for us, and God bless you!

Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Hope, Love & Mercy

• The Justice & Peace Ministry, which has constructed a Community Garden on Our Lady of Mercy parish grounds and provided fresh produce over the past few months has had a fruitful season and looks forward to expanding in 2023. Produce from the garden has been donated to local organizations such as the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and  Hesed House. Late-season plantings are still producing vegetables and herbs. The faithful volunteers have been pleased with the success of this very worthy cause. St. Vincent de Paul Society Volunteers

• Thank you for your support of our clothing drive. Your clothing donation, as well as your financial donations throughout the year, allows us to help our parishioners and neighbors in need. In 2022, we provided assistance to 72 households, helping 185 men, women and children to remain in their homes or apartments in time of financial need.
