Acts of Spiritual Communion

It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion means uniting one’s self in prayer with Christ’s sacrifice and worshipping him in his Body and Blood. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily.

Prayer to Send Your Guardian Angel to Mass

O Holy Angel at my side
Go to Church for me
Kneel in my place, at Holy Mass
Where I desire to be.
At Offertory, in my stead
Take all I am and own
And place it as a sacrifice
Upon the Altar Throne.
At Holy Consecration’s bell
Adore with Seraph’s love,
My Jesus, hidden in the Host
Come down from Heaven above.
Then pray for those I dearly love,
And those who cause me grief
That Jesus’ Blood may cleanse all hearts
And suffering souls relieve.
And when the priest Communion takes
Oh, bring my Lord to me
That His sweet heart may rest on mine,
And I His temple be.
Pray that this Sacrifice Divine
May mankind’s sins efface
Then bring me Jesus’ blessing home
The pledge of every grace
Amen.

Spiritual Communion Prayer

My Jesus, I believe
that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Amen.

“Here are some pics of parishioners of mine watching our parish’s Mass streamed on-line. Thank you for sending your pics of your home altars as well! You can’t come to Church during this time because the doors are locked, but I encourage you to build a little Altar in your home! Set a special place aside in your home and light a couple candles, hang a crucifix or picture of Mary and the saints, place a Bible and rosary there. This will help you spend consecrated time with Jesus, especially on the Lord’s Day, when you can’t come to Mass. Make room, Jesus wants to dwell in your home!”
